About the Author

Stephen Karol Schmidt is a Danish lawyer and former member of the Danish Parliament (Folketing).

Early in his career he studied sociology at Brandeis University in Massachusetts as a recipient of a Wien International Scholarship, where he was taught by Professor Jerome Himmelhoch.

He later founded and ran his own law firm in Copenhagen and worked closely with American law firms. In the 1990s he was licensed by the New York Supreme Court as a legal consultant in the State of New York.

Over the years he has travelled widely in the United States and Europe and has maintained close personal ties with the United States since his student days. His professional life has also included service on a number of public boards and advisory bodies in Denmark.

These experiences shaped his long-standing interest in how democratic societies organize freedom, welfare, and opportunity, and form the background to his forthcoming book

America versus Denmark — What the United States Could Learn from the Danish Model
